Tau Sigma Pi being a fraternity of some kind.

Graduating Magna *** Laude refers to his graduating grade-point-average. I'm pretty sure "*** laude" means with honors in Latin.

For instance, at one university:

3.20 *** laude
3.50 magna *** laude
3.75 summa *** laude

He graduated "magna *** laude" means (all over the world) that he took a good honours degree. Not a first class degree, as that would be "summa *** laude", but some kind of second class degree, which is respectable enough for most purposes. Tau, sigma and pi are all letters of the Greek alphabet and would denote membership of a college fraternity (an elitist social group to which you have to be elected) which has adopted those initials, "TSP" being far too ordinary for the fraternity system, as well as being reminiscent of a type of disinfectant. At a guess, I would say that the custom arose because that way the initials aren't going to coincide with commonplace English initials, as in that example!

Magna *** laude means "With highest honors" - it's a distinguishment for graduates at the top of their class. Pi Tau Sigma is the International Mechanical Engineering Honor Society - a fraternity that he joined.

You already have the answer that magna c.u.m lauda is the second highest honors degree.

Pi Tau Sigma is the International Mechanical Engineering Honors Society. There are two types of fraternities -- social fraternities and honors fraternities. Entry into an honors fraternity isn't all that hard -- but indicates that you did well in the subject.

Magna *** laude is a honor distinction at graduation. It means his gpa was a 3.5 or above on a scale of 4.0. Summa *** laude means 4.0 (perfect score). I have never heard of Tau Sigma Pi but it sounds like an honor fraternity or honor society for people with good grades.

Magna *** Laude means at the top of his class. The other references are simply to fraternities or honor societies.

"Magna *** lauda" is latin for "with great honours", "summa *** lauda" means "with greatest (or top) honours". "Tau Sigma Pi" is just the name of a fraternity/sorority, the "words" are greek letters.
