there are 48 chips of four colours: black, yellow. blue and red. There are no numbers on them. Is there any standard value associated with particular chip clolours in poker or is it all up to me?

Of course you can use whatever values you want.

However, Las Vegas casinos all use the same colour coding. So if you want that Strip feeling, you can use their code (although I'm guessing you might want to tone down the betting amounts):

Red = $5
Green = $25
Black = $100
Purple = $500
Yellow = $1,000

The colour of dollar chips varies, but most major casinos put their own logo or design on their one dollar chips. Others use a heavy, silver chip, embossed with their logo and designed to look like the US silver dollar.

No - you can make the values up yourself. I have a set with numbers ranging from 1 to 1000 and you can set the limit if you want to play for cash. eg. Put £10 in the pot each to get 10 black and 20 red - where 2 red = 1 black. They you play for the chips and forget about the cash values completely.

This is a casino ploy, because (although we see it in films) not many people would put a big pile of cash on the turn of a card, but what's a pile of plastic chips? It's a psychological thing!

in my poker set the colours are white red blue and green.
White-400. Red - 200. Blue - 100 and green - 50. We divide out four of the white chips and eight of the the other colours each for every game we play. Use your colours in the same way. Good luck!

I would say its up to you. I bought a poker set when I was in Vegas and the different colours didnt have values on them either.
