The earliest civilizations were aware of the Moon and five naked-eye planets, and that these things existed in some unreachable realm. So the origins of this knowledge are prehistoric. They knew because these things are obvious to anyone who watches the sky over time.

Aristarchus of Samos, a Greek, estimated the distance to the Moon in the third century BC, but it wasn't until the early 1800's that we had any estimate of how far away the stars are.

Many people probably speculated it, and the Greeks knew there was space only didn't know what it was. They thought it was Olympus, where all the Greek gods met and held councils and such. They knew it was there, but they didn't know what it was.Like you know there's a cookie in front of you but you don't know what flavor it is.
