Saw in the paper today that kids in primary schools can't speak properly. I reckon it's due to the stupid puppets on tv. Teletubbies, tweenies, etc and other things like that annoying Crazy Frog. No wonder they can't talk if rubbish like that is on tv. Mind you Bill n Ben and the Clangers weren't much better either I suppose, but kids weren't hooked to the tv for hours on end back then.

I don't have kids but was blessed with having my mother AT HOME when I was growing up and was taught to read at an early age. I was reading the newspaper at 3yrs old. All I craved was more books, mum used to buy me an Enid Blyton book each day. I've still got them for when I do have kids.

learn about the "dumbing down of America" program and you will have your answer.
It is impossible too, or close to it, to fool and feed propaganda to intelligent people. To make the people believe the garbage propaganda put out by the US government they have been working silently but steadily at dumbing down children.
They lower the standards on standardized tests little by little making children and adults believe their children are doing fine but they aren't. Compare tests given 30 yrs ago compared to those today and you can see the difference.

please do not place children infront of tv's as the key word is PROGRAMMING.
TV's are not the way we learn about the world - for instance give them a real apple to smell taste touch - this is the way that we learn as a species. This is the way we create nueral connections in the brain - there are no sense conections with any form of TV indoctrination - and the leading cause of HDAD and the rest of the ADD letter combinations - these are new illnesses caused by TV programming which offer no nueral connections.
If you want them to learn speech - talk to them as you would an adult - no googoo gaagaa words at all - soon enough they will speak very well.
Find book called Evolutions End by Joseph Chilton Pearce - Cover reads:
A galvanizing indictment how we are sabotaging our children's development

I still think the best TV show for young kids is Sesame Street. The characters talk properly (albeit in squeaky voices), it's educational, and has a lot of top quality celebrities on it. It's also one that parents can watch as well without feeling belittled, and there is humour in there that adults would find more amusing thean kids.

First of all, some kids do have speach problems. However, any parent who uses the television to teach their children anything, deserve what they get. The puppets and characters talk like that to hold the children's attention. Sesame street does teach but I would hope those parents are using phonics. Your answer to your question. Yes, t.v. is bad for children learning to talk.

It is dinner time, but the table is bare. The family has moved to the living room to consume their food in front of the TV. After dinner, the hum of computer games emanates from rooms throughout the house. This picture is replayed daily in millions of homes, but no one asks how our obsession with computers, videos and television may be affecting our young people.
Recent research points to a steady decline in children's language skills. Jane M. Healy's book, "Failure to Connect: How Computers Affect Our Children's Minds -For Better and Worse", lists ten symptoms of computer addiction. Three of the ten affect the ability to engage in meaningful conversation. They include: social withdrawal and difficulty relating to peers or adults, lack of eye contact and language delay. Excessive use of computers, television and videos has revealed cumulative physical impairments of vision, wrist and back problems and overexposure to electromagnetic radiation. Research by the American Academy of Pediatrics cites television watching by children under two years of age as damaging to brain development. The Academy recommends that "total screen time (TV, video, computer) should be limited to one to two hours per day."
The impact of modern electronics on our lifestyles cannot be overstated. The hours once spent playing family games, sharing the details of the say's events and planning for tomorrow have been replaced be television and computers. We know that the age of electronics is here to stay. Now we must learn to control excessive screen time of the young child and to incorporate language and conversational skills, once learned routinely, into early childhood activities
You may not like this but...The bottom line on child speech issue's is with the parent. How much time do you spend with your child? There are many books, cd's and games you can use to help your child develop and articlulate their speech. Make an investment into your child by giving your time and patience. Purchase some learning aids that you both can do together. Communication skills are essential for social/human success.
Good Luck
