Flamingos filter-feed on shellfish and algae. Their oddly-shaped beaks are specially adapted to separate mud and silt from the food they consume, and are uniquely used upside-down. The filtering of food items is assisted by hairy structures called lamellae which line the mandibles, and the large rough-surfaced tongue. It is the shellfish and shrimps which flamingos eat which give them their distinctive pink colour, otherwise they would be white.

It is becaouse of theur diet. This happens not just with Flamingos, but many other spicies and plants. Most of what they eat are crustaceans, diatoms, mollusks and seeds, wich provide that kind of color.
The five species found, have variations of color, but almost in all cases go from a very soft pinky tone to a very reddish vibrant color...
Those birds are lovely and inspiring, but diet makes most of its micracle... hope people would get sweeter eating pie...
