When you buy or lease a franking machine from a supplier they set up a service to credit your machine by modem link.

You buy the machine pay them in advance for the credit and then download the credit to your machine. When it runs out you just repeat the routine.

You get a licence to use the machine from Royal Mail but it is supplied by the machine supplier.

You do not need a business franking machine and account any more. You can just run the envelopes through the printer using their new smartstamp service.
