Many times over different questions people make perhaps flippant remarks that the USA 'polices' Middle Eastern Countries and sticks their noses in for reasons including the rich and large oil deposits that exist there i.e. Iraq. Im not certain about this as isnt oil traded on the open market and therefore is available to purchase and therefore why wouldnt the USA just buy it like every other country? I may be being naieve here!

Yes, oil can be purchased. In fact, if the US wanted to get Iraq's oil it could have just dropped the oil-for-food sanctions and bought the oil, or ignored the sanctions and struck private deals like the Russians and the French. It would have been less expensive than invading Iraq - we don't get their oil for free.

But there may be something to the idea that the US wants to protect the free supply of the world's oil - we all depend on it and it would be a terrible problem if major supplies were cut off. This may indeed be "interference" in the eyes of some, but again it's a big crisis when supplies are cut off.

Oil is traded on the open market and oil producing countries have agreements with other nations to supply a certain amount of oil. Due to restrictions in Drilling in America, we have to buy oil on this open market and pay the going rate per barrel.

Lets look at it differently for a second. Lets say all the OPEC countries were like Iran, and hate everyone, especially the US. How much oil do you think we would get and at what price?? If OPEC decreases production on the world market, the price per barrel goes up. If they increase it, it goes down. If they get mad at a country, the close the valve to that country.

No matter what anyone says in this world, it is all about oil, in one form or another. The more friendly, democratic nations we have out there producing oil, the more stable the price will be, per barrel and at the pump.

Of course that's the case but that would not make a good story for those who want to oppose the US,it has to be about oil or wealth. The opponents of the US feel it necessary to smear the US regardless of the most basic of facts, and it's easy for them to do because they have so many allies in the political world and the media. Funny how all these same people who seem so horrified by US policy don't seem bothered by the policies of some of the most repressive regimes on earth though.

We do buy it like everyone else does. We are protecting the oil in Iraq for Iraq's sake and ours. We can't allow instability in the middle east where the oil can be used as a bargaining tool. Just at Iran and Venezuela are threatening today. For some reason people can't see this side of it.

If the White House genuinely wanted to intervene to stop dictators and genocide they would have intervened in North Korea and Darfur. However, White House policy of intervention is actually determined by natural resources and other Washington interests.
