I missed a few years of the season and I heard that Carla, Benton's ex-wife and mother of Reese, DIED.
How did she die? I heard nothing about it!!

Carla was involved in a car accident at the beggining of season 8. Reese was in the car but only scratched his head.
Roger sued for custody after Benton would not agree to share it. This resolved once and for all that Benton was not Reese's biological father, but as he was always assumed to be, he was awarded full custody after giving up his high-pressure, time consuming job in exchange for one at a surgical center, performing routine procedures like gallbladder removals. This episode (when he was awarded custody) was Benton's last, save for a cameo at Mark Greene's funeral several months later.
