Change Bios to start from CD.

Your win 98 is FAT (File Allocation Table) system - XP needs NTFS (New Technology File Sytem).

So, when you restart with CD in the drive, it will automatically start and ask if you want to format to NTFS and it will go from there. Follow the prompts.

All your backed up data will still work in XP (after restoring your data) even if you have formatted your HDD using the NTFS file system.

If you have a pirated copy of XP you are s**t out of luck. You will have no end of trouble if you install this. I hope you also have all your original application program disks - such as Office, Adobe or the like.

Otherwise, stay with Win 98 until you are ready to spend a couple of bucks.

Word of caution: If your computer is quite old, XP will not work. Especially your UPS and serial port will give trouble and the installation will hang repeatedly. You will be taking a trip to frustration city.

two questions, did you delete the partition? if not you have two different types , fat 32 and NTFS the latter is what is required by XP.
Do you have a legal copy of windows XP ? if not you will fall foul of that dreaded pop up GUI
Best of luck

sounds like a bad CD rather than a hard drive problem, try the disk on a friends pc and see if it comes up with the welcome screen

u need to purchase the xp package from a computer store my friend...

theres no other way around it!

If you have deleted the 1st partition....then the whole cd is basically worthless!
