Be careful what you install and run. For instance, Avast is an anti-virus program. You already have AVG (same one I use, and it's great, but keep it updated). Anyway, DO NOT install two different anti-virus programs. They'll work against each other and cause nothing but headaches.

As for HijackThis (HJT), DO NOT use it by yourself. It can solve a lot of problems, but if you check the wrong thing and tell it to Fix, you could do irreparable damage to your computer. Don't use HJT unless you are getting help from a forum where experts are telling you how to do it, then do ONLY what they tell you to do with it. HJT is a tool used to get rid of malicious things on your computer, and you MUST have help with it if you don't know about adware/spyware/virus removal. Just Google search for "free computer help," and you'll find several free computer help forums -- most all of them have a virus/malware removal section.

CWShredder is another malware removal tool. It's there to remove problems you already have.

Personally, I use AVG anti-virus, ZoneAlarm firewall, SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster at all times while online, and I update both spyware programs and the AVG weekly. All are free programs and do an excellent job (AVG checks everything coming into your computer, including email, for viruses -- ZoneAlarm keeps your computer hidden from hackers -- the two spyware programs keep a lot of malware from getting into your computer to start with, like tracking cookies, etc.)

Two other "essential" programs are AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy. Both are free, and should be updated regularly. Anyway, you can run these two offline. Both have help files to tell you what to do, but basically you run a "full system search" and tell them to delete anything they find. Run those weekly (after updating them -- you must, of course, be online to update any program).

Be aware that the very first time you run AdAware, it may find a LOT of things. I ran it once for a friend and found over 900 bad things (deleted all of them). The record, I believe, is over 2,000. That's just the first time you run it. After that, if you'll download and keep the above programs updated, and keep them running at all times while online, you will only get a few "hits" when you run AdAware and Spybot S&D (run both....sometimes S&D will find something AdAware missed -- it is safe to have them remove anything they find.......**** unlike HijackThis, WHICH NEEDS AN EXPERT TO TELL YOU WHAT TO REMOVE WITH IT!!).****

It may seem daunting at first glance, but these programs -- which run in the background while you're online -- will be worth the effort to download and install. Remember, too, that some have paid versions available. However, I use the free versions and haven't had a problem for over 2 years. You can find all of them by typing their names into Google search.

Hope this helps.

***EDIT*** I didn't see the above couple of answers before my reply. They've given you the links to the programs I recommended. I can tell from their replies they know what they're doing. By the way, both SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster are free from the javacool website, and I run both of them.

Please be advised that in order to avoid conflict you can run only one "antivirus", software. You can run three or four antispyware program if you want.

Two or three is enough as it will slow your system down.

Here are some really good free antispyware program that will not conflict with your other programs.

www.superantispyware.com

www.lavasoft.com --Download their Ad-Adware Personal Se (this company has been around long before anybody ever thought of antispyware security).

www.emsisoft.com A2Squared Malware, download their free edition. (You will have to fill out a short form because they will send you a registry key to install the free or purchase). This is an excellent malware software if you are on dialup as it protects you from all malware including rogue dialers.

www.ewido.net --This is another program that is not free, but will become free after thirty day and you don' purchase. They just remove the guard in the tray and you will have to do manual updates. (Scans all 175,000 object in my pc). Same as the A2Squared or the superantispyware, scan 175,000 objects.

www.avast.com --This is another free excellent program that is an antivirus. (Remember you only want to run one antivirus program in your system as it will cost conflict with another antivirus program). No conflict with two or three antispyware programs. This program also request you to fill out a small form as they will send you a free registration key that is good for one year. After the one year you must request a new key.

Make sure that you update all of Microsoft critical updates that come out every second Tuesday of each month. You can set the updates for automatic updates or you can go to start=Windows Updates= and Microsoft will scan your pc for the latest critical updates for your pc if there are any.

Alway reboot your system should your antispyware/antivirus finds malware, trojans etc. etc.

Hope this helps you.

For your anti-spyware needs:
Here you are:

Pick and choose at least 2 from the list below. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.

Spybot Search and Destroy:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

Ewido:

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Adaware SE:

http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

A-Squared:

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

Windows Defender (Beta 2):

Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place, you can use these 2 freebies:

SpywareBlaster:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SiteAdvisor:

http://www.siteadvisor.com/

................................

For your anti-virus needs:

Here is a list of all the major free anti-virus programs:

Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Anti-Vir:
http://www.free-av.com/

AOL AntiVirusShield:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?

AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5

BitDefender 8: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)
http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-8-Free-Edition.html

Clamwin: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)
http://www.clamwin.com/

All are fairly mediocue compared to some of the top rated (paid) anti-virus programs such as Kaspersky (KAV) or Eset NOD-32. But you can't beat the price.

A system must not have more than one antivirus. You have AVG and that is brilliant. As for antispyware download all these freeware programs(1 antispyware is never enough, so more than 1 is required):
1.Ewido:
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/ewido-setup_4.0.0.172c.exe
2.AdAware SE:- http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
3.SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Spybot_Search_and_Destroy/1043809773/1
Ewido is a freeware in which you can have all the shareware features for 30 days. After that some features will be disabled but you can still use its basic features.
If you want a firewall, go for ZoneAlarm:
1.ZoneAlarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en

Go to http://www.avast.com and download their Home Edition for FREE. It does a real time scan and also updates itself automatically. You do not need 2 Virus Protectors. One will work againg the other. Get rid of AVG anyhow.

Don't install any further anti-virus as this will cause instability and cause more harm than good.

Other good programs to increase your security are:

cwshredder, hijackthis, ad-aware, spybot search & destroy. All available from

http://www.download.com

CWShredder and hijackthis are excellent for browser hijacks
Ad-aware and spy-bot are both excellent for detecting and destroying spyware and trojans. I recommend installing all the above.

All are free and legal.

Make sure you have a firewall installed also such as zone alarm
