The teleological argument for the existence of God is probably one of the most well known arguments for the existence of God. Basically, this argument starts by making the observation that the universe seems to be designed. For example, take a human eye. This is an incredibly complex organ, and yet it is perfectly suited to its purpose. The fact that there is order in the universe, that science has developed to explain many natural phenomenon, all serve as evidence, according to the teleological argument, that the universe has a designer: God.

William Paley came up with the example of a watch. If you find a perfect, working watch in a field, what are the odds that it came about by chance? What are the odds that all of the parts came together, working in harmony with each other, at random? Not very likely! As with the watch, so with the universe, so argues the teleological argument.

As an aside, I think that the title of Richard Dawkin's book "The Blind Watchmaker" was a bit of a dig at Paley's watch analogy and the teleological argument.
