A Civil War is a struggle between people of the same country- a revolution is aimed at overthrowing a foreign power or at changing the existing system of Government. Really a very nuanced difference.

a revolution is seeking independence from an outside source. Like when the colonists wanted independence from England. A civil war is two groups within the country trying to gain control. Like the North and South during the civil war.

A Civil War is a war that is within a nation with the people of that nation divided amongst themselves; taking sides. A Revolution is when there is an uprising of the people as a whole and that uprising causes change to occur within that nation, mainly against unjust policies and procedures that that nation.

A civil war is between two sides fighting with the same ideology for some reasons, a revolution is one where the rebelling side want to oust the ruling side and impose a new system.

If the Powers that be (existing government) win they call it a Civil War. If the Powers that want to be (insurgents) win they call it a Revolution.

my opinion is that civil war is between two parts from the same country(e.g. North and South) and revolution is rebelling against sth(against the communist system)
