The Internet as we think of it today is far different than it's original. There was first what was called Arpanet, which was a military communications protocol. The primary civilian use for this technology was for file sharing between universities or more accurately, sharing the most powerful computers available at that time. That's where the term 'logging in' came from. A person wanting to use the mainframe computer could only do so one at a time, so a person would literally have to 'log in' and 'log out' of a reserved session.
