My husband and I always go all out on Christmas. But this year we have decided to take it easy since we now have a child of our own and expenses don't allow for gifts to the entire family. We have decided that this year we will buy for just the children in the extended family. However, this year my brother in law is dating a woman who has two children and they are having a daughter soon. I want to get my neice a present but does that mean we should buy for the other two as well? They are not married but I don't want hurt feelings.

Yes you should get the kids something. If you want to do a little more for your niece make up for it on her birthday. It's not worth hurting any ones feelings over a gift. Christmas is for family and friends and making more of both.

First off, GREAT solution for Christmas time. With SO many extended and blended families, I think the holiday's make us go crazy and feel too much guilt! BRAVO!
Now, if they live together and the kids are there as well and you spend time with these children I think at the very least a nice low amount gift card from someplace like Toys R Us or something comprable would be nice. But if you have little to know contact with the children, I don't see why you would have to.
