The Pope, like any human being, can encourage the U.S. government about anything.
If fact, the Pope consistently encourages all nations and people to prayer, to study the word of God, and to remember the real meaning of our holy days.
Unfortunately most people don't seem to listen.
However, it is the responsibility of the citizens of the democratic republic of the United States, not really the Pope's, to change things for the better.
With love in Christ.

Black Kat- you are accurate- it's not all about Christians; however, it's not all about you either....
America was built on the principle of freedom of religion. Not freedom FROM religon. We are supposed to all be able to recognize our faiths in a fair manner. So instead of taking prayers/bible out of school- they might have though to make that time frame: Spiritual Development. That way any one could study and reflect on what their religons teaches. And if you do not practice a religon or care to learn anything about one- it's a study hall. As a christian- I wish prayer was still in school when I was in grade school. I understand it is offensive to some people and they can certainly take a moment of meditation instead of reflect on a prayer. I think the problem is that each side wants equality; however neither side is willing to comprimise to find that equality.

Yes, most definitely, but that doesn't mean it's a GO!
There are a lot of other religions out there, and to bring a specific one into the schools, would be looking for trouble, in these troubling times.
In a RC school environment, a different story, your dealing with a private school and their doctrine.

I am sure that many popes have already tried their best to do what you have said. And don't worry the majority of the country understands that the meaning of Christmas is to cut the roots off of a tree so that it slowly dies, along with the tradition of massive consumption of monetary goods and food. Merry Kill-A-Tree Day!

I agree with Black Kat. Part of what makes this country great is people have the right to think and worship what they feel is right for them as long as they don't infringe on others beliefs.
