A sound card is a computer expansion card that can input and output sound under control of computer programs. Typical uses of sound cards include providing the audio component for multimedia applications such as music composition, editing video or audio, presentation/education, and entertainment (games). Many computers have sound capabilities built in, while others require these expansion cards if audio capability is desired.

A Sound card is where u get yur audio output. Mostly found in the back of yur CPU and it may look like this: http://www.more-shop.co.uk/images/sound%20card.jpg

Yur friend may be right but also, a driver may be missing. A Driver is software (instructions) to make the hardware work. So no software for the sound card, no sound. Right click my computer on the desktop and click properties. Click the hardware tab and then device manager. If u see any ! or ? especially under sound, video & game controllers, then drivers are missing. Most likely the drivers is on cds yur computer came with. If u kno the name of the sound card or driver but cannot find the driver, go to www.driverguide.com and download. Sign up, its free. If u see no ! or ? and everything is normal, then yes u need a sound card. Play up with the wire going into the output of the sound card from the speakers, sometimes the plug may get loose or the output socket weared out from constant plugging in and out. Hope this helps. Laterz.

It is called PCI card and it plugs into your motherboard. If you have integrated sound card on your motherboard, you have to disable it in BIOS first. Then open the case inset your new sound card into the PCI slot. It can fit only one way. If if you not sure which slot to go, jut put it in where ever you can fit this. You can't go wrong. Then once you turn on the computer, you might have to install driver for your sound card that came with your sound card. You can get one from eBay as cheap as $6 or you can spend $25 + to buy form computer superstore. If you need help, visit

and find some one to help you.
