This is one for any of you girls who know about nails - or maybe a chiropodist, please. My big toenails on both feet have been gradually turning vaguely yellowish. All the other toenails are completely ok. At first I thought it was wearing red toe polish, because I do know that can leave a yellow stain, but I have let my nails 'breathe' for a good couple of months now and no improvement. As I say, it is just the big toenails that are like this. Any clues?

You got a fungus infection. You can buy creams and lotions from the chemists, but they don't always work. Go to your GP and get some anti-biotics ( that's what I did, and they worked a lot better than the creams I bought ), and remember the healing process is long, as it takes 18 months for a new nail to completely grow back. Whatever you do don't leave it because it will just get worse.

I am answering this with the understanding that your nail was torn off and then the remaining part changed in color till it fell off. The nail itself is dead tissue, but it is nourished by the living tissue underneath the cuticle. if there is trauma to that part which affects that living tissue, it will cause the nail to look blue-gray or green or black and eventually fall off. Don't worry, a new nail will begin to grow there, of course it will take some time and won't happen overnight. Just be careful that it doesn't get infected. No nail means that the cuticle is unprotected so try not to keep your foot immersed in water too long or get it dirty and use something to disinfect it everyday. If you have mild itching or sensitivity in the toe, use a bit of soothing substance like aloe. if you have a lot of pain or it seems like there's an infection there, see a doctor. If you toenail was already green before it got torn off, the reasons could be different. In that case you should see a doctor. I realize you have issues with insurance but personal wellbeing wins over money anytime. Go to a hospital, most will give you a payment plan if you cannot pay them all at once.

God, saw the other answers, pure crap. Here's my advice:
IF only the big toe nails r turning yellow (no greens or pain or pus) then it's becoz they are dead i.e. they have stopped growing
here's what u gotta do:
1) Cut them but if u r fond of long nails then i suggest u trim them,
little bit every week
2)Apply lemon juice on it once a day for half an hour and wash with water afterwards.
3)apply olive oil or vaseline on them at night.

I m sure this will help.

p.s. if u like the ans plz make it ur best.

Sounds like a fungal nail infection. There is some stuff in the chemist that is great as Ive used it, sorry cannot remember the name, but ask in the chemist. It cost 16.99 and you have to apply it every day, it will take a few months to clear up.

See a doctor, probably a fungal infection, or some kind of mineral defeciency but that would ghave to affect other nails also...so if its still there even aftyer the whole breathing thing then yeah see a doctor, if its nothing to worry about then just leave it,, drink lots of water..

Possibly fungal infection. The best way to check is to scoop out a bit of white stuff from underneath the nail and give it a good sniff. If its nasty you got a problem, no smell and your feet are sweet.

you got nail fungus, your toe nails will grow thick and then come off, it will take a year for this to happen, there are many remedies for this, you can also use a foot bath with a little bleach.
