Yes. A few times a year. If you don't think it's necessary, put a piece of lightweight breathable white fabric over the nozzle and run it across the mattress. You will change your mind.

Vacuuming a bed will usually make the situation worse as almost all vacuums create a cloud in front of their suction that can redistribute particles and such into the room. Combine this with the fact that when you directly vacuum your mattress, you are pulling up things from inside your mattress, some of which will be redistributed into the air to eventually fall back onto your bed, and you are only making the contents of the surface of your bed worse then it was.
Most people really don’t need to worry about the level of mites or dead skin within their bed – as we all tend to replace our mattresses every couple of years and remain fairly clean most of the time.
If you are looking for a more permanent solution, there are a number beds out there that can offer a bit more in the way of protection from what’s bothering you. Most notable, a natural latex bed naturally resistant to dust mites and mold. At the very least, there are a number of machine washable, hypoallergenic pillow top mattress pad covers that can be an economical way to cleaner sleeping.
An easier solution would be to just wash your sheets every four days (as it takes a while for things to work down into the mattress). Short of that, you really shouldn’t vacuum your bed.

yes I vacuum my mattress, I remember the first time I did it I was shocked to see what I was in the vacuum cup. Once you do it you will do it all the time.

sure i've vaccuumed my mattress before, and my daughters. dust mites are real and they just live on your old skin flakes...in your pillows, mattresses, sheets. i also use some protective covers from an allergy magazine. i cover the mattresses and pillows. i'm not a clean freak either...my husband just has allergies and it helps to have the covers on the pillows etc. and to vaccuum from time to time. =) hope i've helped ease your worry.

No, but I have a waterbed. I do however strip and wash down my mattress at least twice a year.
So I do not think you are being a freak...
