Well it is actually colour coded so that the colour in the ph paper can be matched to know whether the liquid is acid or alkaline. It also has numbers on the scale so we could know. 1-6 acid 8 -13 alkaline. 7 - neutral.

It is a scale that measures the acidity of substances. It ranges from 1 (most acidic) to 14 ( least acidic) 7 is neutral

It looks completely opposite of what an acid scale looks like.

it's just a number line really. pH is tested by pH meters which give you a digital readout and you can then tell if something is acidic or basic in nature
