Gay is generally used for men, Lesbian is used for women. Hence it is the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered community. If one is referring to the GLBT community at large, it was once referred to as the gay community. That isn't quite so accepted anymore.

its not the category that yahoo answers dreamed up.
in the late 1960's/early '70's it 'became' politically correct to use Lesbian and Gay to denote the difference between men and women instead of using the term queer.
since that time gay has been used by both the straight and 'queer' community as a means of identifying both males and females.
personally, I'm from the old school and still use queer to id. myself even though it raises some of the grrrrr of those I call my friends, regardless of their sexual id.

if a gay woman is a lesbian, then why dont gay men have their own name? makes you think? i think gay men got the raw end of the stick, no pun intended of course. I'm going to write to Wiki
and demand a new word.

I struggle with that one too. ermm, in my world, these labelings would not exist... i think they are daft. but im sure your question is seeking a different kind of response. so i guessing, that the reason for this singling out. is to make us feel embarrased, but also, it is fun to say the word lesbian.

because due to the way that our culture is, lesbian refers to females liking females and gay refers to males liking males, but essentially, they are one in the same

YOU CAN USE GAY WORD FOR BOTH, AS IT IS HOMO-SEXUALITY, ANYWAY. TO AVOID REFERRING AS MALE OR FEMALE GAY, LESBIAN WORD IS USED. ORIGIN OF THE WORD IS 'LESBOS' WHICH IS A GREEK ISLAND, WHICH HAD ALL WOMEN WARRIORS.
