In 1818 a soldier and author named John Symmes proposed the idea that the earth was hollow. His biography is at:

Some of his writings are posted at:

One of the believers in this idea was Adolph Hitler. Hitler is reputed by some to have actually fled to the interior of the earth rather than being killed.

There still exists a group calling themselves The Hollow Earth Society. One of the most recent publications that supports the idea is the book The Hollow Earth (Bell Publishing Company, 1979) by Raymond Bernard. Bernard appears to hold quite a few degrees, but is quite reclusive. His degrees may be as questionable as his ideas.

The most current publication I can find is sold as an e-book titled:
"World Top Secret: Our Earth is Hollow!" at:

This guy is hilarious to me because he appears to take himself quite seriously.

As a geologist I can assure you that is all nonsense. There have been enough expeditions to both poles, as well as satellite and daily crossing by commercial airlines over the north pole that if a hole existed someone would have noticed. Nevertheless, I have seen discussions about the Hollow Earther's trying to raise funds to investigate and explore. I guess if you live in the suburbs it seems exciting.

Man, thats a OLD myth! Supposedly, there is a hole near the North pole that allows entry to a secret world. Depending on the theory, this is either a series of large caves, or even an entire hollow inside of the planet.

The area the hole is supposed to exist has been pretty well explored by humans, aerial photography, satillite imaging, etc. and it does not exist. It does not help matters that the most common location for the hole is in the North Sea.

What hole are you talking about? If this is the hole in the ozone layer (in the upper atmosphere) yes, there was one (it was more pronounced over the south pole) and it is healing itself now that we stopped using CFC's.

If, on the other hand, you are referring to this mumbo jumbo about a hole that connects the center of the earth to the outside, and that alien from outher space fly there routinely with their flying saucers, well, for starters, the north pole is under water. So any water would drain into the earth.

(And I don't believe in alien from outer space coming down to earth. But that is me...)

Also, there was a nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus, which went under the ice of the North Pole in 1957, and several other submarines did that later on. There are even icebreaker cruises (the Russian Yamal) that will take people to the north pole for about $20000.

I saw a book about "The Hollow Earth" years ago. It is nonsense. People have been there and seen no hole.
