A cerebral aneurysm where there is a congenital weakness in a brain artery which causes the artery to balloon out. This either leaks or bursts. The result is often fatal but I was lucky.
At age 22 I was running for a works bus when suddenly I got a terrible headache. Luckily, after a misdiagnosis in the local hospital I was transferred to Barts Hospital in London where the diagnosis was confirmed and had one of the best UK neurosurgeons who operated on me, and 40+ years later I am fine. The surgery is different these days but not all GP's or casualty doctors pick up the correct diagnosis. A sudden violent headache where there is no previous history should suggest a possible SAH ( sub arachnoid hemorrhage) A CT scan can confirm it together with a spinal fluid tap etc.

a bad thing....the area served by that vessel goes without nourishment, plus the hemmorhage increases the intracranial pressure causing general problems, and the blood is an irritant to the brain tissues.
