Basically it means buying & selling shares. The rates are determined by market forces & the performance of the limited company whose shares are traded. There are primary & secondary markets - primary is one where the initial public offerings of a company (IPO) is bought at a fixed price & sold later on when the price goes up. Secondary markets are where one can buy or sell the sahres in open market. Now all the shares are traded only in demat (electronic) forms.

What you should do is go to you local library and check out a couple of books. You'd be surprised at the thousands of books on this subject.
