My son started at 6 months, but just so you know, crawling is not a milestone according to professionals. Some babies never crawl (as was the case with my first son who walked at 7 1/2 months.) The milestone doctors use is forward progression, which could be creeping instead of crawling. One of my twins didn't crawl until 11 months but began creeping at 5 months.
If you want him to progress quickly make sure even now that you put him on his belly on the floor for a majority of his awake time. Limit use of playpen, infant seats, walkers, and other devices designed to limit baby's mobility.

One of my children crawled at 7 months. One never crawled, just went right to walking. The one who crawled, and so started walking later, was much more "well coordinated" as a child, but now of course, there's no noticeable difference.
One of my kids talked very early, and the other was on the late side, but by 18 mos. there was no difference between them. I think some people feel that when a child starts to do something is highly significant, but I feel that with most kids, it really doesn't make much difference.

Anywhere between 6 and 8 months is when they usually start. By 9 months they usually have it down but when they start it's just more of a "scoot" rather than a "crawl".

They start around the 9th month. Some babies start as early as 6 months.
