I discovered today that a girl I know is my half sister- we have the same dad. I confirmed my suspicions by saying I know her mum & finding out her mum's name. I don't know if her parents have ever told her about me, but I want to say something to her because she's going to live in Canada, and I really like her. I don't want to upset anybody, so what should I do?

To add to my question, I can't ask my father. He was only 21 when I was born & he hasn't seen me since I was a baby. I have a sister who is abroad at the moment

i wld say ..yes ..tell her who u are...this may be the last chance u have to let her knw this...its a turning point in history for you as it will be for her also but ..theres nothing better than to knw u found someone in your life who is closer and hence may mean even more than u thought..its a choice i knw is gonna be hard to make but i wld say ...let her knw and take the chance to find each other for who u really are..otherwise it will just be a lifelong lie and it wld hurt you more than anyone else ...good luck with your choice...i hope u do whats right for you and your sister..

I'd say contact your dad first then go from there, I've been chasing up family I've lost contact from and found it easier to deal with the parents before contacting the children.

I think it depends on how old she is. If she is an adult, then maybe you should. But if she is younger, you should probably talk to your dad, or her mom. It would be great if you could have a relationship, but not knowing how much she knows about her (and your) father's life prior to her existence, could be traumatic for her.

If you have your facts straight- then by all means.
Honesty is the best policy.
She may know already-
She may not care-
She may be trilled.
Aren't you?
Don't tell her unless you are open to an honest relationship.
Family is family. You have to be sincere.
This invloves more than just you and her.

Talk to her parents and see if they have any good reason for you not to tell her. If they don't then ask her parents to say something. It will seem better hearing it from them.

Don't let your chance pass you by. You're not doing anything wrong, so, if anyone gets upset about it, that's for them to deal with, not you.

I think you should tell her. If you don't, you'll never know what might have happened. It's always better to be open and honest.
