...after breaking his leg and hand in Iraq. This was almost a year ago. He is fully recovered and has no limitations to physical activity. He wants to start a career in fire fighting due to not being able to go back into the army b/c of his injuries. My question is how can he get started? I don't know what he needs to do to get this career started. He is a very motivated man and has a huge heart. He is always wanting to help others and thought this would be a good way to give back to his country. I want to help him get started but neither of us know where to start.
Thanks is advance for any help!

My son-in-law wanted to be a fireman and has just achieved his goal so I will tell you how he did it.

He started out by going to a volunteer station and signing up. He said that way he could find out if it was what he really wanted to do. He found out right away that he loved it. So while he was still a volunteer several nights a month and working full time, he started his E.M.T. college courses. After he completed those he started at the fire academy. He researched first to find out which academy had the highest hire ratio. He finished at the academy and because he was still a volunteer, the fire department let him use his volunteer equipment and he didn't have to pay for any new stuff. That saved him about $400.00.

Now he is on with the County Fire Department and in a year they are going to pay for him to attend Paramedic school. Because firemen work 24 hours on and 48 hours off, he can work in the hospital emergency room on his days off of the fire department.

I hope this has helped you. This is the way my son-in-law achieved his dream and it was inexpensive.

Typically each state has its own fire academy. He should begin looking there. Most firefighters are also cross trained in medical. Taking a basic EMT class would be a good start as well.
