To capture the entire desktop, press the Print Screen key.
To capture only the active window, press ALT+Print Screen.

Then, start MS Paint or some other application and select Paste from the menu.

You can press the "print screen" button and that will "capture" an image of what ever is on your current screen. From there you can open paint or word or any image editing application and goto "Edit, then choose paste". From there you can do anything you want with the image.

As an alternative, there is a free application called FastStone, seems to work really well.....
