DreadCthulu, yes you are right it is the itchy finger not the smoking gun but that is an argument for tackling the cause not against treating the symptom; we need to do both. For, as in medical treatement the dffect can become a cause of further trouble whilst the initial cause is being treated.
Summer, oh yes blame the British, for what happened over 200 years ago, you've had plenty of time to rectify the problem since them. You haven't even learnt to hold fair elections yet. Your electoral system is rife with corruption. About time we re-appointed a governer to liberate the American people and restore democracy.
David W all firearms must be licenced in Uk since 1967 with the exception of airguns

I agree. All the US weapon legislation regulations need to be reviewed.

That would take an amendment to the Constitution. Tough to do.
It sounds like the answer, but it's a small minority of misfits out of 300,000,000 people.
As things stand, there will always be illegal guns, whatever can or would be done.
This is so heartbreaking. The Amish, a people who only want to live in their own way and do not interfere in anyone else's life. Unfortunately, they have suffered prejudices over the years, and only because they live a little differently.
I've been to their community in Canada and they have wonderful home made food and gifts.
They hold no prejudices towards anyone.
I've also been to Lancaster, PA. although not in their community. How can those children, who survived, ever feel any trust outside their own people?
Damn bastards, if they want to kill themselves just do it. Blow their own heads off.
I wonder if there is just too many hours of kicking this kind of thing around on the news. It certainly can't help. Damn media, they even try to pry into their deepest personal grief. Geeez!
No limits to their frenzy.

Guns are inanimate objects ( like money, books, films & all the other things that we try to blame for our failings!) They are effectively a tool and are only as "good or evil" as those who use them. Japan outlawed private ownership of guns & started having a rash of knife attacks a few years back, would you ban those next? Advocating banning guns is a classic case of throwing a band aid over the symptom ( like censorship, political correctness, throwing money at hunger and poverty) and serves no other purpose than enabling people to pat themselves on the back for " doing something" when they've done precisely nothing at all. All these band aids won't stop or solve anything, if you want to stop this stupidity then its time to diagnose the fundamental rot underlying our society that enables the stupidity in the first place.

The British are the reason why it's always been legal for almost any adult in the American population to own guns. They armed themselves against the British in the late 1700s and decided to stay that way.
Considering how widespread gun ownership is, it's amazing how this sort of tragedy doesn't happen more often. You can't take their guns away -- think about it -- the law-abiders would turn theirs in and, suprise suprise, the criminals would stay armed.

Not just THOSE morons but all morons who have guns and who get giddy about them.
Never understood how people (i.e. men - do any women get giddy about guns? No - dont send me the web links - have heard about them!?!) are so enamoured with guns.
I agree get rid of the guns, but its not just about those particular weapons - its about an increasingly violent society. As people become more alienated and screwed up they will kill each other with whatever is the nearest implement.

It was a school shooting that caused all guns tobe banned in UK several years ago. There haven't been any since.
But Americans are a war-mongering tribe, and insist on their right to bear arms.

No, it simply means that we need to be more careful about who is able to obtain a gun. Perhaps there should also be stiffer penalties for those who murder others. The shootings are only another result of how f'd up our judicial system is.
