I used to wonder if it was a financial thing but when I delivered pizza in college, the only people that didn't tip were black people (my own people). I'm not the only one who complained. Other minorities, hispanics, tipped. Every now and then some black men would tip but most of all black women didnt tip a cent.

AF_Wife - Very good point. I mentioned on here that I've delivered to some hispanics who live in apartment complexes where there are alot of poor construction workers, maids and even illegal immigrants (i know this bcos these complexes have been targets for immigrant busts) but guess what? They all tip! That's why I dont think its a financial thing that alot of black people don't tip. The black people I delivered to lived in nicer apartments than the hispanics i mentioned, especially the black women, but yet don't tip a cent.

You tell her AFWife. I think she is one of those people who never take accountability. Simple as that. From what JusToya says I guess she is implying that black folks are the only ones who don't tolerate a cold pizza...........not true.

my husband used to deliver pizzas and he said the same thing, he said they would give him exact change! i can't believe that, its so rude, he even said the black guys who worked there didn't want to deliver the the houses where black people lived because they didn't tip? i have some friends who are waitresses and one of them loves black men and people especially and she said they would never tip, she said there were like 6 or more they would leave a buck or nothing?!? and another one would also say they wouldn't tip and they were real fussy about stuff like they would want glass of water to put there silverware in because they didn't think it was clean enough and wouldn't tip, another friend i have works at olive garden and if there is 6 people or more a tip is included in the ticket, she says they always get outraged??!? i don't understand why many of them don't think they should tip? and for the black people on here who say don't generlize, well get over it because it is happening all the time and it is causing people to generalize, talk to your community if you want to change peoples views,

Okay, ignoring the fact that a sample size of 50 (or 100) is hardly statistically significant for the population at large, for a second, there's a very simple answer for your question. It's interesting that you posted this question in sociology, because therein lies your answer. In our society, a disproportionate number of African Americans are poor as compared to Whites. If you have less expendable income, you are less likely to spend that income on something that is basically optional and has no benefit to you. It's not a white thing or a black thing, it's a green thing. People with more money can give away more of it. I've always wondered why restaurants and delivery places don't simply add an extra 15 or 20% to their price and then not allow tipping. Seems like that would be a more fair system for waiters and delivery drivers.

While it is true that other groups of people are also horrible tippers, you asked about black people specifically. In my opinion, blacks in general are such bad tippers not just because of economic status per se, but because of upbringing and history.

I am the adult child of parents who grew up in before the civil rights movement. My black parents could not dine with their white counterparts at restaurants because of segregation laws. Because of this, my parents did not learn about tipping. They mostly ate at home. This can translate to other services that common black folk could not participate in because of segregation or economics. This is just a case of ignorance. Some people in the black community do not know many things because they have not been taught it or exposed to it.

You may think that since we can all dine together in the present day that this should not be a problem anymore. The fact is that ignorance and just plain old stubbornness runs deep and has a strong hold on some people. Some know they should tip a certain amount but feel they don’t owe you anything, and some just don’t know that 5% is not a decent tip.

I tip waiters, bartenders and pizza delivery drivers especially if the service is good and the person is friendly. I didn't in my younger days.
Ironically I used to frequent a Black owned restaurant/bar where the cashiers had an attitude yet expected me to tip them,I thought "here's a tip--put a smile on your face and lose the attitude". If the service sucks and the folks act like they are mad at the world I won't leave them jack.

LOL this is funny! All the black people I know tip. I tip as well, but I can honestly say I don't tip as much as I should. The reason being, I'm a full time student with no job, and I have a nine month old child. MONEY IS VERY TIGHT! I pay for everything with school loans. But when I graduate (December) I will not have a problem with giving a descent amount of money for tips simply because I will have it then.

I make it a point to tip when I can. I have heard about this problem before and so I make it a point to tip when I go out. I don't want anyone thinking that I don't understand the value of a dollar. There are a lot of blacks that do tip and then there are some who just can't period. Just because you live in a nice apartment doesn't mean that you have money either. Some people can't even afford to pay rent for there places.

I do however tip waiters when I go out to eat but I don't tip by that percentage rate thing I tip on how well the waiter did. Well you got us it's true!!!! when I order my next pizza delivery I will give the driver a dollar or two geeeez! Seriously though I never knew to tip pizza guys!

Don't know, but this is exactly why it's hard for black folk to catch a cab in NY. I also noticed this while delivering pizzas.

Other groups that horrible tippers: Doctors and lawyers.

Great tipping groups: Other servers, beauticians, and entrepreneures.

i always tip... unless the waiter was terrible, but that almost never happens

but i think the young lady who said that black people don't know is very right. I didn't know you should tip cab drivers, but I tip everyone else, including my fav bartender ^_^ (who's probably the best tipped one at that bar), pizza people, and hotel staff

I'm glad you brought this up.

Maybe they don't tip because the service sucks. Do you come to the door and greet, do you act like you want to be at work? When i go out to eat if i have to keep asking for a refill or find the waiter I don't tip as much as I should. And as for the pizza man most of the time they mess my order up and the pizza is cold so nope im not tipping. Don't u get paid?
