Because we need a way to punish people who behave in a way outside of society's normal standards. Also, it puts the responsibility for vengeance on criminals on society as a whole, instead of the person who was wronged.

cause if there weren't any laws, someone could come right into your home right now, steal all your things and then burn down your home, and guess what, nobody would ever bother to catch that person to make him/her pay and nobody would bother to take care of you.
