sometimes you have to use a function key on the laptop to output to the s-video. On my laptop it is FN and F5 but it is different on every computer

I know this is considered "old technology", however it has been used for years. I was told by an audio/video techie that you may not be able to get audio, only video, once you do get it to work.
Your TV may need to be changed to a 'LINE' mode, meaning it is taking its signal from another 'line' coming into it, rather than a DVD player, VCR, cable signal, whatever. Find the menu option on your TV, or tuner or whatever changes the channel for you to try and select "LINE" mode.

My son wants to try the same cable from a camcorder TO A COMPUTER so that he can "upload" to the computer for editing......

All I know is that you likely need some software on your computer in order to "read" the video or whatever other media you are trying to get onto your TV. If Windows doesn't have the proper software to do this (which I suspect not) then I suggest that you do a detailed Internet search. Use the "Advanced Search" on Google or any other search engine - you will get more refined answers. (If you are lucky you may find a free program to download which may work !?)

I look forward to reading any other suggestions.
