Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

Please try the following solutions:

* Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
* Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
* Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
* Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
* Send the recorder in for service.

I've have had a Creative CD-RW with he same problem. I have tried to upgrade the firmware but nothing happened. The I have opened the recorder and cleaned the lens and the problem went away, but just for a couple of weeks. After that the drive failed to write any cd's.

The most likely solution is either service the part (if you still have warranty) or just go ahead and buy a new one. I'm sorry for you but there is no other way.

By the way, i have picked up the firs part of my message from the Nero faq page.

No, i use dvd r + or -, and i use all speeds.I prefer the 8x burning speed as i seem to get better results. But sometimes you can get a few duds in the discs no matter what you use.Try restarting your computer, as it could be just a minor thing that rights itself after restarting.I have never came accross that message before myself.Good luck, and i hope your burner is not dying.

If you do a firmware update to that drive, be prepared to replace it! That should be the last option you use! Most manufacturers will NOT honor their warranty if the drive had a firmware update done to it. If it's still under warranty, take it in for repairs. Try burning another disk. According to the specs from sony, that's got a 4X write max DVD+-RW in it. Don't waste your money buying 8X or 16X blanks, unless you getting a good price on them, it will only burn to those at a 4X speed.

If the burner isnt a + and - burner then yes that could be a problem, the 8 versus 16 shouldnt be a problem because you are going down.

Nope regrettably :(... i have tried many cases too ha ha. you may even with the indisputable fact that burn different formats of video. attempt a application like nero and it provides you with the alternative to burn a number of styles of video clips. those video clips will play in maximum dvd gamers they in simple terms wont be in a dvd format. particularly cool once you employ homestead windows movie maker and make your individual video clips :)
