With the start of the new school year my son was so excited that he was starting 5th grade. After his firstday of school, he came gome with at least 2 hours of homework, the good student that he is he finished all of his homework. A few weeks later, he did not understand the math assignment and a sked a teacher for help. When my son did not get the answer right away, the teacher got very impacient, and slapt my poor child. I then called the school, and requested a confrence with the teacher. The teacher got a 1 day suspension form work, and you all know if a student would slap the teacher, he/she would get expeled.

Firstly, as a teacher myself I'm shocked and ashamed. Please accept my apologies that this should ever happen to your son or you.

Some teachers are pretty rude - if you look back over your son's school life, you'll probably realise that it's not all teachers but still there shouldn't even be one teacher that is rude.

The teacher had no right whatsoever to touch your child.

I'd be filing a police report and threatening to take it further if the school doesn't do anything else - the teacher should end up with the incident on her permanent record.

And you know what, even if your son wasn't the lovely child he seems to be, he still wouldn't have deserved any of what happened to him.

I'd be asking some loud angry questions from the school. Ask them why the teacher was only suspended for a day and whilst you're at it, ask for another teacher that is more professional and receptive to the learning needs of their student.

Ask other parents with students in her class if she's done anything to their children. If so, I'd be taking legal action against the school and forcing them to get rid of this teacher.

Again, I'm so sorry that this happened to you and your child but I urge you not to let it lie at just one day from school (for all we know she got paid for that day and it might not even have been listed as a suspension on her record - she might have just been told to take a stress day or something).

I think the suspension should have been longer myself. No teacher should slap, punch, kick any student, usually discipline is done by the principal or at least in Ontario when I taught that was the way it was done.

I'm going to say something here that alot of people aren't going to like.
By accepting students with really high marks into teachers colleges, you often get teachers, because it comes so easily for them in their subject area, who can't empathize with students who aren't as brilliant as they are. Who have problems with subjects. Many highly brilliant students can't show someone else how to get an answer because it's like breathing to them.

I think it 's time that faculties of ed, medicine etc stop looking just at the high end of the grade school when they accept graduates and start to look at the middle level students, their communication skills and their emotional iqs rather than the other iqs for educating docs and teachers or other professions who must deal daily with the public.

And faculties of ed have to begin to teach how to teach and not just the pedagogy.

Oh my God!! - The teacher slapped him? That is terrible! And only 1 day suspension? Wow... I would be taking my child from the school and warn other parents of what the teacher did and how the school have treated the situatation.
My sister is a high school teacher and she cannot touch any of the students, or she will loose her job altogether.

I think there are good teachers and bad teachers. Some of them shouldnt even be there if they dont know how to deal with children. They just do it for a paycheck. It was smart of you to go straight to the school about it. My son has adhd,,and i had to go to the school last year to take care of an issue he was having with the teacher...And once he learned my son had adhd,,,he totally backed off of him. and approached him in a different manner. Dont know where you are from but if any teacher put thier hand on my child it would be on.

Here in the UK a teacher would be sacked if they slapped a child.

I have known a teacher to get a written warning for restraining a pupil in a science lab. The pupil had a glass beaker he was going to throw and the teacher was trying to prevent this happening but he still got in trouble.

Sugar, you stay right on top of this situation. This is the kind of thing that makes kids hate education and want to drop out. Do not let this teacher bully your baby. If your son was slapped, insist on transferring him to another class. Take serious action, call the police. That was an assault.

I have almost the same situation, only the teacher grabbed my son by the arm, I am going to schedule a appointment w/the principle, if not enough is done w/the teacher, I am going to the school board. I suggest you do the same. This behavior from the teacher should not tolerated!!!

A large part of the problem is the fact that the children are rude and have a lack of respect. Looking at your spelling, perhaps the teachers should even be tougher and give out more homework.

hey teacher will be eacher they think just cause they are older and they have more power then us in school they think they can say act and do what they want but they cant they are nothing. i think you should go up to the school and ask what kind of school are they running he is onlt in the fifth grade what with all the work i think it would be best if you cut back on some of it. and talk to the teacher and the principal about it and they have no choice but to take it uppon request.
