this question can and will be debated with passion long after you and i are gone, but it's one that i've always answered the same, without hesitation. there are MANY with GREAT stats...marino, elway, unitas, but joe cool, joe montana, was and IS the greatest ever. you don't agree? count the rings....5, yes, 5 of them. now, many will argue that joe had a better supporting cast tham marino or elway or unitas or namath or whoever, but SCREW THAT! montana didn't draft rice and roger craig and ronnie lott. he simply went out and calmly, cooly, performed at the highest of levels for MANY years. i can just imagine being in the huddle, down 6, at our own 20 yd. line, with, say, 1:47 remaining on the clock. i'm quite sure there were many times that this was indeed the scenerio, and each time, i bet joe looked up at his teammates and said....guys, lets do this, we can win this. and look how often he did just that. JOE MONTANA, simply the best ever.

If you look at the stats and numbers its pretty amazing!! Overall performance would have to go to Peyton Manning as current quarterback playing now but if you look into the past as a lifetime then Dan Marino would be first followed closely by Joe Montana...there numbers are outstanding!!! Surprising that the old time players of the 50s,60s,& 70s still have some records here too...Sid Luckman,Johny Unitas...George Blanda..etc...

TOP 5 I've had the pleasure to watch during 40+ years of being a fan:
1) Elway
2) Marino
3) Unitas
4) Staubach
5) Montana

Joe Montana was probably the best QB of all time. That being said, I would still rather John Elway on my team. Elway had a cannon for an arm, he was mobile than anybody. He was bigger and stronger and when the game was on the line I don't think there was anybody better. Montana was a better QB but Elway was a better all around athlete.
