"Mobile" has too many letters for them to be able to spell it correctly. If they were to adopt the word "mobile" they'd inevitably either miss out a letter or two, or switch a couple of letters around, just to keep it interesting. Did I say "interesting", I meant "misspelled".

Because it's from "cellular". Remember when Cellnet launched here and had the hexagonal logo? That's how cell phone coverage works, transmitters divide the country into "cells" and when we travel we can move from one cell to another. Some phones will show you the area code you're in, by a process known as triangulation. This also helps track down injured people who make 999 calls to within a few metres.

Its because the area served by a mobile basestation is called a cell, short for celluler. The network is made up of cells that link base stations to home location registers. There is a whole bunch of stuff in the middle but I'd to tell you about them, you might have a cardiac arrest laughing at it.
Can't see why it makes you laugh.

j.charles very funny i got that song in my head now thanks. And yes they call them cell phones. really both are correct. But when they say tomato i think english people are wrong adding the R because there is no r. Im english and i say tomarta but where Im from is very slang i like in stoke the pottries and everything is slang there really and we all say different things. Also I think look and book are wrong there are two o's making an oo sound so its not buck or else it would be spelt buck and its not luck because there is another being for the word. So I say BOOK and LOOK not buck an luck

The UK happens to be the only country to refer to them as 'mobiles'. Most of the world refer to them as 'cells'.
