Every year the company I work for pushes us to give to United Way. I have never given in the past because I had heard that the CEO earn mega bucks and would rather donate directly to causes instead of through United Way. Plus I don't like the way they say I should donate and was told that the local United Way guy told our boss that our company should be given more than we do! Would like some feed back from others on the subject. Thanks. :)

Don't do it. I have a cousin that is a fundraiser for them and ALL the employees there make Mad Cash!

You're better off giving to causes YOU pick. I usually give to our local Salvation Army and the women's shelter.
Sometimes I help Habitat for Humanity. And I like to help the local food banks as well.

I totally agree. This whole United Way 'fair share' contribution has been forced upon us like some sort of tax for the middle class. Heck, if United Way is really that great then way don't they just fund it through taxes.

Personally I buck the trend and resist the pressures to donate. Around my work it is peer pressure that makes people donate, so I am trying to start a group of people who can think on their own.

I used to have a job where everyone was expected to donate to the United Way. I did not do so because I think some of what they support is immoral. Almost everyone did donate though, and it seemed the people who needed the job the most donated the most.

You answered your own question... That's the same reason I do what you do... donate to individual charities and causes... at least I know the entire amount I donate reaches them...
