Im 15 and I am an African American...I was just wondering....Its crushing my mind here! People say "Oh sure, there are attractive black women out there, IF THEY ARE MIXED WITH WHITE BLOOD"...Thats a loud of bull...Cause the majority of African Americans are mixed with something "other"... I am mixed with indian and everyone always tells me I am cute and pretty(but I look more african :).....but lately I have been Finding it hard to accept WHO I AM because of this stereotype... I'm slender, and I DO have a wide nose, my lips aren't thin and my eyes aren't blue either! (and because of that I'm suppose to believe less of myself and the heritage that made me....I think not...) Why is it that people consider black women NOT beautiful?

What qualities make you feel that they are?
I don't want a "racial fight" in here....
I just want some HONEST ANSWERS.

Swetie pie you sound beautiful to me! being honest here, you are gifted with one of a kind body and you want to stereotype it???Its really there problem if they dont see your beauty... I have broad hips...so should I feel ugly because its "inn" to be skinny..oh wait J Lo made it fashionable to have hips...so suddenly i hot...
NO dear, beauty is always there, its just the onlookers who change their mind...dont ever think you are not beautiful...when you believe you are, you will be!
Most of my male friends have African girlfriends(no mix, just african) because they are more sexy, preety...I'm being honest here...and have a bit more experience(27yrs) so believe me...its not you who is not beautiful...its the people who dont see it yet...

WHO considers black women unattractive? Who are you listening to? What a load of crap that is. I pay a boat load of money for someone to pump my lips and they could never look as good as yours. Beauty comes from within. The most beautiful women in the world are the ones who believe they are beautiful. Their presence when they enter a room is commanding. It is because they enter the room KNOWING they are beautiful. Many of these women are not at all beautiful by magazine standards - it is just something that they feel about themselves that shines through. Was Oprah Winfrey a beautiful teenager? No. But she believed different. She also developed her qualities and her brain. Look at how beautiful people perchieve her to be. Would she be that beautiful if she hadn't transformed how she felt about herself? Keep your head held high and rise above the nonsense. At 15, you grab on to the negative. like all 15 year olds. Trust me, you aren't hearing the positive because it is a rough time of life when it comes to self-image; you will out grow giving a damn what what morons like these people think. Walk tall and beautiful, little. girl! This is advice from a 53 year old white woman.

Girl, I didn't know that they did. I have seen many beautiful black women. There are beautiful women of every race. Why let what a few ignorant people say ruin your self esteem? They are not important. What will make you beautiful is you! Just present yourself in an attractive way, carry yourself confidently and be a nice person. Those are the most beautiful traits in any one. Just enjoy life and forget what you think is the stereotype. Besides, as a woman, believe me, we all have things that we don't like about ourselves. You are no different than the rest of us! Just forget what you think you are supposed to be and be who you are. I'm sure you are a beautiful young lady.

It is unfortunate that you are surrounded with people that make you feel that way. But I also think that you may have developed a stereotype yourself surrounding the idea that people think black women are not beautiful. Yes some people might but not all people. Black women come in all shapes, sizes and skin tones. From Alek Wek to Beyonce. Instead of worrying about what other people think, worry about who you are.

I truly feel that beauty is about confidence and the way you carry yourself. Find out who you are and the things about yourself that make you proud. Hold your head up and F**K what people tell you.
Dress up in something you love and make your self up. Eg. MAC and Iman cosmetics have a wide range of cosmetics for many skin tones. A great book I would suggest for you is "The Beauty of Color" by Iman. It a beauty book catering to women of color that is about embracing who you are regardless of your skin tone.

In life you're always going to find people who want to hate. Either your too dark or too light, too short etc.
I know it may be difficult but don't let others define who you are because you'll never win. Good luck!

I think this stereotype is changing. A few decades ago thin was disgusting, now it's "in". Just look at renaissance art - those women don't look like today's runway models!

Society largely defines "attractive" by setting up standards of beauty (models, movie stars, etc). In the past decades most of these standards were white women. That's starting to change. Even now there are many people who don't try to judge black women by a "white" standard of beauty.

It all started with the older folks, they don't like white/ indian/ chineese/ etc. But there own ppl, and the same for whites....
All the ppl of the world are beautiful but is what u see through your eyes that make it so.
You have to stop thinking like that and have a positive out look on things. Cause you judging the cover of the book.

This is another media/culture stereotype, like women being considered "fat" if they wear a misses' size 12 (US) or higher. It is all blown out of proportion in the popular consciousness, and if you ask any particular member of society, he or she will be just as likely to tell you that black is beautiful, and that, as you say, you are cute and pretty! And don't knock thick lips; there are models and actresses who pay big bucks to thicken their too-thin lips! I don't have blue eyes either; personally, I go for the intensity of the look in the eyes, rather than any particular color. It is individual to the person and part of the whole "look." It sounds like you're sensitive to what media says is "cool." That is normal when you're 15. Just play up your strengths and make it clear you're proud of your African heritage! Cheers!

Oh Lizzy- As a white woman I don't get it either, mostly because I think black people are so beautiful, even as a child I always wished I had dark skin! Also I've noticed that most black women age SOOO much better than Caucasians, less wrinkly and leathery. Don't worry so much about what those that lack an open mind think , you sound beautiful-love yourself and other will too.

Our mind is programmed to identify patterns which are easy for our eyes to sense and that makes the object having that particular pattern seem beautiful. For example, certain types of facial attributes and soothing color make it look beutiful. It may vary from person to person how he /she perceives beauty and it depends on the external environment in which the person has been brought up. For sure, black are beautiful, for some of the persons :)

Beauty is usually determined by the symmetry of a face not by skin or eye color. The more symmetrical the face the more universally beautiful a face is. Don't judge yourself too harshly. At 15, you still have some facial changes coming and my guess is you are pretty now and will be even prettier in the future.
