Petland (Calgary) has plenty of rats.

I believe it . Then I am an Albertan, from Calgary too. I wouldn't agree with the fact that there is a perfect rectangle in which there are absolutely no rats, and that a few feet from the borders, like in BC or Sask. there are scads of rats' nests.

But I do believe that in the populated areas of Alberta, where people can report on the "rat-status" that there are no wild rats alive or breeding. We may be just lucky due to the climate, and it may have nothing to do with man's intervention.

Example: They know that there are certain climate areas in Canada that do NOT breed the particular species of mosquitos that carry West Nile virus, while in other areas those species are prevalent - hence you get more outbreaks of West Nile in birds, mammals and humans (ie: southern Ontario)

Raccoons, those pesky omnivores, are found virtually everywhere in North America (where it is warm) except in southern Alberta (why? I'm not quite sure!). I think the fact that is is so dry and that there are not many streams & lakes for them to forage in, let alone, decent trees for them to make home in - is why they don't thrive in S. Alberta. They have been reported in Waterton Park at the very, very southern portion of province, but I really think they take the tour boat from the Montana border to 'illegally' sneak over to Canada (LOL)

BTW, Newfoundland does not have raccoons on their rocky island, nor skunks, the last I heard. They've never been able to make the swim, nor been successfully brought over by man. I think Nfld does have rats, brought by ships and over the last few decades, squirrels where brought to the Rock and now are all over. Newfie kids have never seen a real live skunk, nor raccoon...boy, what deprivation!! LOL

Alberta, yeah,no rats. WE are lucky..but how long will it last?

alberta, canada?

not a chance.
i wonder how they even come to such a conclusion, the land is so huge, and so wild, there are probably still places where no man has ever been before.
much less a searchteam with dogs and nets, capable of finding a rat in hiding.
no i dont believe that, and hell no, i dont believe anyone is a position to rightfully make such a statement.

who did, by the way?
