You should check out the very detailed information about malaria for those people traveling to India that is on the CDC website. There is a page called, "Malaria Information for Travelers to Countries in South Asia," which contains very detailed information for all travelers who are going to India. The site is: http://www.cdc.gov/travel/regionalmalaria/indianrg.htm.

Specifically, the CDC recommends the following for malaria prevention when traveling to India:

All travelers to malaria-risk areas in the South Asia region, including infants, children, and former residents of the Indian Subcontinent, should take one of the following antimalarial drugs (listed alphabetically):

atovaquone/proguanil,
doxycycline,
mefloquine,
primaquine (in special circumstances).
Note: Chloroquine is NOT an effective antimalarial drug in South Asia and should not be taken to prevent malaria in this region.

Most antimalarial drugs are well-tolerated; most travelers do not need to stop taking their drug because of side effects. However, if you are particularly concerned about side effects, discuss the possibility of starting your drug early (3-4 weeks in advance of your trip) with your health care provider. If you cannot tolerate the drug, ask your doctor to change your medication.

We have been holidaying in Goa for several years now, the first couple of years we took anti malaria tablets but then we stopped on the recommendation of a Goan doctor. Apply your insect repellent by about 4pm or you can get suntan lotion that has insect repellent in it. Stay away from grass and plants unless you have applied repellent. Take or buy Vick because if you apply vick to mosi bites it takes the itch away. the smell wears off quite quickly.
Drink at least three bottles of water during the day. The main cause of Delhi belly is dehydration. Don't have ice in drinks unless it is made using bottled water.
Bargain for everything! Agree a price with the taxi driver before getting in the taxi and take into account that the government rate is 8 rupees a kilometre - most of the taxis don't actually have meters.
Get small denomination notes when you change your money as you will need it for taxis and tips.
If you do decide to take Anti Malaria tablets what you need is Avloclor and Paludrine. Boot have their own equivalent which is cheaper.

You don't need malaria tablets for Goa, especially if you are going during the tourist season - November to March. I know that some doctors and travel advice centres will say that you do but I have been many times and have spoken to alot of people, including those from the medical profession. They say that in the dry season the instances of malaria are very rare and that there is a far higher risk from the side effects of the tablets, also that there are many different strands of malaria and the tablets will only protect you from some of them. If you do get ill then a doctor will not be able to identify what strand of malaria you have until the tablets are out of your system which can delay treatment.

I would suggest that you go to Boots or your local chemist they will advise you what to take. If you are prome to be bitten I would sugest that you take the tablets its not worth the risk. We know many locals who are malaria sufferers.

Malaria tablets can actually make you more ill than the disease, don't take them unless you absolutely have to.

best to ask the doctor as they can check to see what will suit you best. We had a student at work once who took the wrong tablets and had a SEVERE allergic reaction and ended up vomitting constantly and lost about 4 stone in weight!!!
