I can only relate this to Google - having an uncle who used to work for the copmany - I assume the two systems are simular.

"google" bugs - "travel" the internet and find new sources of information. Pages stay at the top if they:

↓Are popular
↓Updated regulary
↓Are of relavent information

I believe you need to update you website more often to get it to reach the top. I very much doubt it is an error.

This happens from time to time.

But in the last year Google has had a couple of major revisions of its approach to assessing how to rank sites for search results - which can also affect your Yahoo results.

Generally speaking if you are building a REAL site - with good quality original information - the occasional shake up will not affect you for long and your site will rise like cream to the top of the search-results bottle...As long as you are NOT using 'dodgy' promotional methods...and you keep steadily building your relevant in bound links...and creating your sites presence in the many smaller/niche directories.

When you say was on 'Page 1 for Yahoo' - I presume you mean for one search term? (BUT Maybe you were lucky and were number 1 for many search terms? It is not clear) Often small businesses get swept up with the concept of being No1 for a particular search term...which is a bit of a nonsense - without knowing what the many search terms there are that might generate your trafiic overall.

It is now becoming commmonly accepted thst 80% of web publishers battle it out for 20% of what are perceived as major search terms. This makes these very competitive. So maybe a waste of time for smaller guys who can win the game through 'cleverer (but ONLY legitimate) tactics'.

There is much wisdom in looking at the 'long tail' of search results - as overall MANY visitors to your site will come from a wide variety of smaller volume search terms...which will over time altogether represent the larger proportion of a sites trafiic. Look at ways to get more out of your traffic potential. A useful audio file about 'the 'Long Tail' issue is here http://longtail.sitesell.com/build-better-sites.html

If you are not using so called 'black hat' methods to get traffic, and have not been 'cheating' the SE's to get your good search results position - rest assured over the coming weeks your site will begin to 'rise again'

I agree with shortyxxs answer. In addition:

If you want to guarantee to be on the 1st page of either Yahoo or Google... you need to give those companies $$$'s for the privilege!

Otherwise, you have to rely on their search products "ranking" of your site as being one of the most useful to have on their page 1. If their automatic (and human-based) ratings lead them to believe that other sites would be better on their 1st page than yours... you'll be moved down the list and will have to play a catch-up game in order to get back on page 1
