Tell them they can be an active participant to protecting themselves while in school or anywhere else. If they ever notice someone or something out of the normal, they should tell the teacher, or anyone in a position of power. Tell them there will always be dangerous people in the world, but your children are strong and can pay attention to their surrounding to protect themselves. When they get home from school, ask them how their day went and did they notice that everything was normal or was there anything different today. Good luck.

The best way is to talk with them. Assure them that everything is being done to protect them, but do not lie to them, for they will find out thru internet or TV on what has been happening. Make sure they know that if anyone suspicious is around or if they hear anything that sounds wrong, to let you know or authority know. This is a very hard talk to have, assurance of this is hard to deal with too. Just be honest and open with answers and questions.

Remind them that the police are "after the bad guys." Kids just need to be reassured. Tell them that they have their friends and teachers and they are not alone at school.
Although, it may not hurt to run through the "stay in class", "don't talk to strangers", "don't take shortcuts", etc...
Speaking as a student myself, I'm sure that they'll be fine in no time. Best of luck.

take your kids to school for a few weeks
and get involved in the school some how
if your kids see that you
and you are not afraid of them going to school
then they will trust the school them selves
and therefore love going to school
as if there is nothing wrong again
we hope that all of our kids can be safe at all times
good luck
