Some color changs as the fish matures is normal, however, if the goldfish was once black and has turned orange or was once orange and is turning white it could be that the fish has been kept indoors and without full sunlight. (which would be the case if you had a tank in the house). The fish is suffering from pigment loss in the skin. Red Capped Orandas are famous for losing the red cap. Orange comets are famous for turning white. You should however make sure that the cause isn't disease by tanking a sample of water to your pet store for testing, keeping an eye on the fish to see if he is acting oddly and making sure that his scales are lying as smoothly as all the others.

Goldfish Turning White

There are over 100 varieties and goldfish come in many colours from bright yellow to black, which relate to the habitat they live in. A goldfish will turn white when placed in a dark room. A male goldfish is usually thinner with breeding spots on the head and flanks during the spawning season. If you are close enough to see you can also check the anal section, which is concave in the male and convex in the female.

gold fish are effected by the amount of sunlight they are exposed to... Goldfish and many other animals change color in response to light levels. Pigment production in response to light is something we're all familiar with, since this is the basis for a suntan. Fish have cells called chromatophores that produce the pigments that give coloration or reflect light. The color of a fish is determined in part by which pigments are in the cells (there are several colors), how many pigment molecules there are, and whether the pigment is clustered inside the cell or is distributed throughout the cytoplasm.

If your goldfish is kept in the dark at night, you may notice it appears a little paler when you turn on the lights in the morning. Goldfish kept indoors without full-spectrum lighting are also less-brightly colored than fish exposed to natural sunlight or artificial lighting that includes ultraviolet light (UVA and UVB).

Color changes are normal for goldfish and carp species. Sometimes it is the breeding and genetics, sometimes the WQ or a combo of each. Black is still a unstable color in goldfish though despite the best of breeding and genetics. Foods can effect color, the amount of daylight, backgrounds even!

Just because a goodfish turns white though doesn't mean its sick or old, they can live up to 30 years with proper care! :)

Have the eyes turned big, has the goldfish got black spots too? If both are yes, it's not good but left untreated can kill. See/ask your local vet about medicine for your little fishy.

Color change is pretty normal for goldfish, and it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with light. Read the article below.
