The primary reason is the movement of the plates in the earth's crust (Plate Tectonics).

Mountains are very slow to reveal their reasons. Especially in sensitive subjects like why are they here, But if you go live on a mountain top for a few years and keep very quiet, they might give you a clue.

mountains were not any pre-detertmined /ordained feat.
Mountains are in essence rock formations , caused by volcanic eruoptions that date back many millinia.
During the Ice age - erosion took place on a grand scale - and the more resilient rock remained.
as for the purpose they serve - is anyone's guess.

Mountains are actually extinct volcanoes. What happens is when two techtonic plates push together, they form the volcano, volcano ages and eventually becomes extinct and becomes a mountain.

take your pick god thought it would look pretty cool to have some nice scenery or maybe you should look in to plate techtonics and what happens when they collide
