Ideally you should only charge your phone when you get a warning sound that the charge is running low. Check the instructions that came with your phone to see what's recommended.

It won't damage your battery if it is the adapter that was supplied when you got the phone. Those adapters are designed to quit sending currents once the battery is fully charged. So regardless of how long it takes to charge, it will only charge the phone until it is full.
I recommend powering the phone off while charging over night. If you leave it on then it is using power so there is a charge current running.
Power sources that can damage your battery are things like car chargers. Car chargers don't know when the phone is fully charged and constantly send a current which, over time, will have an inverse effect.

Certain types of batteries develop a memory, which means if you only charge them part way, they will have a tendency after that to only charge part way. If you have a lithium ion battery in your new phone, you really do not need to worry about it, because those batteries don't exhibit this tendency.

Try to charge it when you get a warning, although that becomes very inconsiderate to the other end!...I have heard that your charge remains about as long as it was being charged...now, only to remember to do it that way...I say, charge it overnite and you will be safe for talking the next day...

Let it fully charge whatever it takes. I didn't let mine and it totally killed the battery. Now it will not even last some days so let it charge completly.
