FICTIONAL characters (and you're gonna get the "Oh, mom" on this, but I would suggest you do it anyway) I would let them, but make sure, no matter their age, that they understand that they are fictional.
REAL LIFE, I personally have a serious problem with, and will not allow my children to go as at Halloween.
Truthfully, the line is blurred, and I'm uncomfortable with both.
My kids are getting a kick out of what I'm letting them do this year. I found some BRIGHT orange material for $1.00 a yard and a shorts pattern for $.99 at Hobby Lobby, then I found some plain black T-Shirts at Academy for $.88. I'm going to make them some shorts, then embrodery "Got Candy?" on the front and "I do" on the back of the shirts, plus some Halloween designs. I also founf some face paints, and I'll decorate their faces, too. Simple, cheap, and they say they're going to wear them next year too.

Dressing up the boy as a princess won't make him gay, or a serial killer, or depressed as he gets older. He may be embarrassed by using it yet who does not have any embarrassment from their formative years? If this replaced into any incorrect way around and a woman had to gown up in as a prince no person could say something. Is dressing up as a princess his theory or yours? It sounds like it is yours. My suggestion could basically ask him what he needs or take him down the gown isle and enable him %. a "boy" gown.

I refuse to let my child dress up as anything evil or satanic. It would really bother me if he wanted to be a murderer. I encourage my son to dress up as a real life person doing a job--military, fireman, construction worker, cowboy, etc. We have fun making his costume together or if he wants to be a cartoon character or something like that I let him buy the costume. I say that you should stand firm in your decision not to let your boys dress as killers. Offer them other suggestions and if they don't like it, they can just do without.

My little ones want to dress up as (in order of age)
A dragon
A mythical horse
A dog

I will allow them to dress up as what they want but I have veto rights on their costumes. I don't think I would allow them to dress as killers, but if they want to dress up as martial artists (ie ninja's) that is okay. But I don't want them to dress up as Jason or whoever from Friday 13th movies. So let your boys know that you want them to be creative and to have fun, but you don't think in this atmosphere of killing (all those children killed by gunmen in schools recently) that it is apropriate for them to go out as "killers" themselves. Ask them if they want to go as the grim reaper (not a killer but kind of fun) or the angel of death if that is what they are into at this time of their lives. Also, ask them why they want to go as killers? Are they trying to make some kind of statement or they just think it would be funny.

Advice? Well to me the answer should be obvious. I mean honestly what kind of mother would allow her child to dress up in anything evil, sadistic, or as a killer. I don't even think parents that allow thier children to dress up as witches, demons, and such are that thoughtful. They are not thinking of the kind of impact that happens to a child, and what kind of world we are allowing our children to one day have to live in as an adult - but halloween costumes aren't the worst of it... since we are leaving them a very weak planet full of disease and polutions....

I would suggest to your boys that Halloween is meant to be fun, and while some people think its 'fun' to be horribly scary, its much better to dress in something more positive, unigue and fun. Challenge them to come up with something really different, something no one else with think of.

And stand up and say "your not being a killer, that is unacceptable" you can do it!

as Real Life Killers? that is a bit overboard, IMHO. No kid needs to idolize manson or bundy or gacy or hitler.

Movie killers like freddy or jason would be okay cuz they are not real.

LOL
Well it's the TV causing it. Just tell them no. If it's someone like Freddy or Jason from the movies that is normal, but someone like Ted Bundy or someone I wouldn't let them. Did I spell his name right... Just tell them you don't feel right about it. My son is going to be angel of death and I don't like that.

I wouldn't let my kids dress like that either, however, I have little girls, I don't think they would want to. I would let them dress in whatever they wanted, as long as it's within reasonable limits.
