A friend told me, quite strongly, that it should be put in the trash can and not down the disposal.

Is that not what a disposal is for in the first place?

I would not advise putting pasta, potatos or anything real starchy down the disposal. Starch is one of the worst things because it will build up on the walls of the pipe and then if your not handy doing plumbing your going to be in for quite a bill. I have done my own and let me tell you that it wasn't a pretty site at all. So if possible I would put it in the trash and then dispose of as soon as possible. Have a Great Day and Good Luck

I would put it in the Trash but you can send it down the disposal a bit at a time- without harm.

You are right, that is what the trash disposal is for.

Just as long as you don't dump it all down at once. Not all foods are OK for the disposal. Please see my reference.
