If the criteria of self to distinguish things vary, then:

If I ask you to distinguish a cow, you will distinguish a donkey as cow.

If I ask you to distinguish a tree, you will say water as a tree!

Human communications become meaningless if the criteria of self to distinguish things vary.

True. If there is no objective reality then communication does become meaningless, or worse, oppressive. If I can push my perception off on others and bind them to it, then I have power and they have none. That is too often government in action.

But the universe is a whole and it is a moral whole. Consequences are not arbitrary, they arise out of the invisible part of life, which is real and foundational to the visible.

Don't get caught up in a lot of mysticism. In the end it will let you down at best and at worst mess with your mind.

There is a Psalm in the Old Testament of the Bible which speaks of the deep relationship between ourselves as spiritual, as well as physical and emotional, beings. And it speaks of our relationship with the Creator of our souls. I think it speaks to your question, although it may seem oblique to you. Anyway,
it is Psalm 139. Look it up and read it through slow, two or three times--savor it. It is a thing of beauty and an exploration of the reality of life and spirit.

And of it's preciousness.

Keep on keeping on! Maggie

Actually, communication is in and of itself difficult, without the necessity for us to change our criteria to complicate it more. We often forget that, and hence talk freely thinking that everybody is going to understand our messages.

It's good to ponder those things, as intelligence is not something that comes naturally but rather it takes an effort to push it forward.

It is only common understanding for people to understand the things in the same way. But even then there are so many languages and so many names. The same thing is called by many names, such as water is called with different names in French, German, Russian, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi. But it denote the same material. Hence it is for convenience.

Sorry to say, your undestanding on self is "external appearance?" which you perceive through eyes, ears, nose, skin, tongue and mind? In that meaning, if the cow changes to donkey or water changes to tree is not going to make any difference. If you change your address makes a change in your self?

"Self" got a different connotation. Please use the correct word to ask your questions otherwise you will get all wrong answers.
