Basically it's a mobile phone that appears to have sold for over a grand when I was dubious as to whether or not it'd get its reserve of fifty quid. The winner mailed to say could she reduce payment to £620, I agreed. She said when money has cleared could I post the phone to Nigeria. Well, as long as the money's in my paypal account that's fine with me - I'll post it recorded delivery anywhere for that money! Thing is, this whole thing stinks of a scam. Can paypal retrospectively take the cash from my account after I've posted the item? Has anyone heard of this kind of scam? The word "Nigeria" set off alarm bells. Any advice would be appreciated!

What a suprise - I got an email from "paypal" saying that the money had been transferred to my account. Checked with paypal and (shock! horror!) no money there. Have reported abuse to e-bay, forwarded message to paypal for investigation, left negative feedback for user and have sent a very rude email to the scammer. My work here is done. Thanks for the advice everyone - much appreciated - thought it might be too good to be true. Now if anyone wants to buy a Nokia 6630 for about £70.... :-)

Don't take anything to do with it. They will send you through a fake pay pal reciept. Even if they do pay they can recall their money from paypal later by saying they never recieved it.
A while back there was warnings all over e-bay about this kind of thing and the top contender was mobile phones and asking them to be sent to nigeria, or S Africa
Put it down to experience and relist it

Sounds like a scam to me as well. These are going around.
Yes, depending on the status of the account, paypal can make a chargeback.
You need to make sure the customer is authenticated with paypal and that funds are totally cleared and they can't make a chargeback.
Contact them before dispatching.

Make sure the confirmation email from Paypal saying they have paid is actually from paypal. I would say this stinks to high heaven. If I were you, I would trust your gut instinct and apologise, make an excuse that you dropped the phone and it has broken. Relist it. Contact Paypal if you are not sure. There is a phone number.

Mmmmm I'd be dubious too. Definitely Nigeria sounds dodgy. I'd be thinking they wanted your paypal account details for a scam. I'd say best to be safe than sorry.

Its a total scam.
They'll probably send you a bogus cheque or bogus paypal receipt for £1,000
Then they'll say "Sorry, I forgot we'd agreed £620 and I have sent the full price of £1,000 by mistake. Can you send the £380 difference back to me by Western Union or Moneygram?"
You send them £380 and then later you find that their payment was bogus.
It's not your phone they want...they'll be scamming for money.

This is definately a scam. Do not proceed any further or give out any details.
Report to ebay and relist the item, adding on the listing "WILL NOT POST TO NIGERIA"
See the help boards on ebay for more info if you need it, they are very helpful there.
