any ideas for a cheap garden pond? we have dug the hole, we have the rocks to put around the pond but have no plastic to line it with! we went to the garden shop and it is quite expensive...it is going to cost 50 to 60 dollars and we were looking to do a pond for 20 or so dollars. has anyone made a cheap pond themselves and can offer advice or does anyone have any creative ideas for what we can line it with?? i would love any help or advice you can give!! cheers!! ;o)

you can buy building or construction plastic covers in sheets
6mil thick and they will last 2 or 3 years IF nothing punctures it
just remember if any animal falls in or large rock falls in or tree
branch punctures, that's it
save up some money and get the real liner when you can afford it, it will be worth it
you are going to need some kind of pump and fountain and
filtration for this pond
make sure that it is deep enough so that it cant freeze solid

What are you going to put in the pond? If you are going to put fish, don't go with concrete. You'll have seal the concrete several times and repeat this over the life of the pond to keep chemicals from leaching into the pond water and killing the fish. It will be cheaper in the long run to search the web for pond liners and order one. You might have to come up with some bucks, but you'll be a lot happier in the end. Most pond liners will last 10+ years. You can also put old carpeting down underneath the liner to protect it from rocks and branches that might otherwise damage it. If you are looking to go the cheap route, buy a premade plastic pond and sink it into the hole. If you just want plants and a water feature you can go with concrete, but I wouldn't recommend it.

The investment you make now with liner will save you many headaches later. Concrete and swimming pool liners sound like good ideas now, but they can lead to problems. A pond isn't cost free, and shouldn't be treated that way. If you are looking for an alternative, try the local classifieds. Sometimes, people put in larger ponds and sell their old material (liner or pre-formed pond) at excellent prices.

Skim coat the pond with cement....depending on the size, you should get away with $10.00 or so.....put on one layer, and brush on a second coat...use a soft brush, then after it set, flush with weak muriatic acid at least once....and better is to fill the pool, then drain it and apply a coat of epoxy paint.

You could place the rocks in the pond then pour cement over them. I don't know how much cement you will need or how much it will cost you.

i would suggest filling up that hole unless you are going to be putting in something that constanly moves the water. Otherwise you would be giving the mosquitoes all breading rights and not to mention the concern with the West Nile virus.....squash the idea!.
