I've seen the sites that say they can get it to you in 24 hours. Is that a scam?

I think this is definitely a scam. Don't ever pay someone else to get private information for you. They are legal, because you give them permission to access your private information. But they charge you for a service you can perform yourself (for the fee the state charges only, not something the state charges in addition to this company's fee). In addition, what makes this sound like a scam to me is they can't legitimately get a birth certificate any quicker than you can. The sites that I saw said that you could order the certificates 24 hours a day, not that you could get them in 24 hours. The ones where it is run by the state for 24 hour access are probably legit. But if someone tells you they can get it in 24 hours, I would highly doubt their claims and not give them my private information. Also, to be considered an official copy, whatever they provide you must have a raised seal from the state. Most people will only accept an official copy.

You can certainly do it in the England/Wales but delivery can be sped up if you pay a higher rate.
For Scotland you can do it by phone or by writing - they quote 10-14 days.
Northern Ireland quotes 7 working days.

There are also companies that will for a fee make a local application for you. I used one called www.bigfamily.co.uk but I see they are no longer trading on the internet. These type of companies can make requests on site at the registry office so the certificate is sent quicker and some pre-resesearch to confirm dates from catalogues can also be made.

Many genealogists use this facility, I have been a satsisfied customer. Contact your local genealogy society for their recommendations if you are still nervous.

In most cases in the United States you can acquire the required forms on the internet but the actually request and payment must be made through the mail or in person. The forms must have your signature and other pertinent information before a certified copy of a birth certificate will be granted

Go to the state for which you need and look up the vita statistics. For instance, if you were born in Virginia, google Virginia Vital statistics, or department of health.

Look for sites that have .gov on the end...those are legit. I had to get one a year or so ago quickly and just googled my state and vital statistic to get the right place.

I wouldn't trust any site that isn't a government site.
